In a well-known 2015 study published in Science, researchers led by Takefumi Nagasawa found that when dogs and their owners looked into each other's eyes, both showed a rise in oxytocin — the same hormone involved in the bonding loop between a parent and infant. The effect was strongest in dogs with longer-gazing relationships with their owners, suggesting it's not just instinct, but something that builds over time with a specific person.

Interestingly, the same effect wasn't found in dogs raised by wolves, hand-reared closely by humans from birth — pointing to mutual gaze as something that developed specifically through domestication, as a two-way communication channel unique to the dog-human relationship.

Cats were more likely to slow-blink back at humans who slow-blinked at them first, and were also more likely to approach a stranger who greeted them with one.

Unlike a hard stare (which cats can read as confrontational), a slow blink is unmistakably calm — half-closed eyes, held for a beat, released gently.

Neither of these are just cute anecdotes — they're two real, separately-studied communication systems, each shaped by thousands of years of dogs and cats adapting alongside humans in very different ways. Dogs evolved a genuinely novel oxytocin-based gaze loop that doesn't exist between dogs and wolves. Cats, descended from a more solitary ancestor, developed a quieter, lower-stakes signal that still gets the message across just as clearly once you know what to look for.
